The youth group “WIR SIND HIER!” met with fans from Fanprojekt Babelsberg at Karl Liebknecht Stadium.

Fanprojekt Babelsberg stands up against discrimination and against racism. So it was only a matter of time when we would visit them. After brief preliminary discussions, we met with some activists from Fanprojekt Babelsberg at SV Babelsberg’s home game against VfB Auerbach at Karl Liebknecht Stadium. We presented our workshop concept to the Babelsberg fan project and some of their “Diversity is Strength” coordinators, exchanged ideas about our anti-racist work and talked animatedly about anti-gypsy ideas in society.

Afterwards, we cheered on the teams on the soccer field, invited the Babelsberg fan project to our theater performance the next day, and made plans for the future together.

It was a great and inspiring meeting and we are looking forward to our further exchange with Fanprojekt Babelsberg!

Our peer* training

What sounds and is written like a tongue twister is a complex, year-round program for our young people, in which they receive comprehensive training as peer trainers. In order for them to be able to offer workshops on the topic of antigypsyism to their peers in schools and youth facilities later on, they have to acquire these skills at such a young age.

It is not only important to have theoretical and legal knowledge on the topic and to get to know different levels of discrimination, but also soft skills such as argumentation, conflict management, moderating and leading groups. Recognizing fake news and learning tools for successful communication are also important components of the peer trainer training. In addition, it is important to us that the prospective peer trainers develop their educational tools during the training and get many opportunities to practice before the “real thing” begins. Accordingly, our training is designed by a group of experienced trainers after many discussions with our young people.

In times of the pandemic, we realized the importance of creating online opportunities for our youth group. Therefore, we quickly moved to online workshops. Since October 2020, we have been giving our workshops exclusively online. However, we must not lose sight of the fact that online workshops require some infrastructure, such as laptops and working internet. This is because some online tools that are popular to use in online workshops cannot be operated from a cell phone or tablet. Just as in the school setting, we see this as a major barrier to participating reasonably in online offerings. For some of our participants, we made it possible for them to sometimes use the infrastructure of our office space. Sometimes, to avoid traveling by public transportation, we have even opened our homes to individual participants. We see how engaged our young people are in the workshops, how they grow together as a group, and how empowerment literally happens before our eyes. As a team, we don’t want to let this commitment down. Despite the pandemic, we are moving forward with the workshops and the youth are looking forward to their own workshops that can take place in any form starting in the upcoming 21/22 school year – online or offline… preferably OFFLINE!

Advent, Advent, a little light is burning…

The days are short, the weather is too cold. There is a pandemic that complicates this dark season… but after Advent comes Christmas and our team is young and motivated. The youth would like to put on something creative that also provides information. Sounds right up our educational alley!

Out of the group an advent calendar against antigypsyism has been created, which lets open a little door every day – from A to Z. The campaign, which became an Instagram hit in its time, can be viewed at the following link…this time even without having to wait for the next day:

Theater play: We are here! Where are you?

At the youth center Dosto in Bernau, our youth group from Berlin put on a theater performance as part of the intercultural week, which we would like to incorporate later as an educational tool in our project. After intensive rehearsals, the young people, together with our chairman and experienced directorHamze Bytyçi, conceived a play in which the group talks about their experiences of discrimination. The play also tells the story of the first Roma congress 50 years ago and the resolutions passed there, as well as theatrically demonstrating the continuity of antigypsyism. After the performance, there was a round of questions in which the young people talked about the project and about the different realities of Roma lives.

Networking meeting in Eberswalde

Today we are in Eberswalde – with our great youth group from Berlin and with Merle, who is responsible for our Brandenburg group. Here we met with two other Roma youths and talked about a possible youth group in Brandenburg. Before, such a meeting was not possible because of the pandemic. As long as the weather cooperates and there is no lockdown, we would like to continue organizing such networking meetings. The best way to talk is face to face! In the near future it will become clearer if and how we will build up our Brandenburg youth group. If you live in Brandenburg and know interested young people with a Romani background or with experiences of racist discrimination who would like to be trained as peer trainers so that they can later report on antigypsyism in educational institutions, contact us!
